Hokuyo is pleased to announce the release of its new UAM-05LPA safety laser scanner. The UAM-05LPA provides safeguarding and personnel protection for industrial applications through non-contact laser-based detection.
The UAM-05LPA is ideal for mobile machinery like automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), which can monitor travel paths and detect obstacles. It enables the safe operation of these vehicles without manual intervention. The integrated safety functions help bring greater automation to complex, dynamic environments like warehouses and distribution centers.
Key Features
The UAM-05LPA safety laser scanner offers several key features that make it suitable for a variety of industrial applications requiring safeguarding and personnel protection. It features a maximum protection range of 5 meters, allowing hazardous areas to be protected in close proximity operations. Beyond this is a maximum non-safety warning range of 30 meters, expanding situational awareness for operators and autonomous equipment. Together, these dual ranges enable simple or complex safety zone configurations tailored to application needs.
Extensive Environmental Monitoring
The UAM-05LPA's 270-degree field of view provides comprehensive environmental monitoring within a wide area. It scans the full horizontal plane as well as up and down, giving a thorough view of the scanner's surroundings. No blind spots are left uncovered, improving safety. This comprehensive view also aids in applications like obstacle detection, path planning, and localization for autonomous mobile robots and vehicles.
Flexible Area Configuration
Areas within the scanner's range can be precisely configured using the UAM Project Designer software tool. A variety of area patterns are supported, including options for single or dual protection zones, as well as warning zone 1 and 2 definitions. Up to 32 customized area patterns can be stored, allowing complex environments to be modularly addressed. Different area combinations like protection and warning zones or dual protection zones offer flexible solutions.
Optimized for Short-Range Detection
Distance and angular accuracy are enhanced for short-range detection applications that require high precision, like automated docking and guidance systems. Maximum measurement error is just ±20mm within the 5m protection range. Angular deviation is minimized at ±0.3 degrees horizontally and ±1 degree vertically to precisely monitor narrow areas. This provides robust, repeatable detection at close quarters.
Rugged Housing for Industry
The UAM-05LPA scanner is housed in a rugged IP65-rated casing engineered to withstand harsh environments like factory floors, warehouses, and metalworks. Protected against dust ingress and water jets, it can operate reliably even in demanding industrial settings. The durable aluminum and polycarbonate construction also protects internal components.
Rapid 30 ms Scanning
A high-speed rotary base inside the scanner housing spins the laser beam at 2000 revolutions per minute, completing a full 270-degree scan every 30 milliseconds. This rapid scanning interval allows for real-time monitoring with minimal delays. Hazards are detected quickly to maximize safety. The rapid updates also beneficially aid tasks like localization.
Functional Safety and Laser Class
As a safety component, functional safety is paramount. The UAM-05LPA carries a SIL2 rating according to IEC 61508, providing a high level of risk reduction. The embedded laser transmitter operates at eye-safe Class 1, minimizing risks and allowing use near personnel. Together, these features ensure safe, standard-compliant operation for workers and bystanders.
The UAM-05LPA safety laser scanner offers a comprehensive set of features that make it a reliable and flexible solution for a wide range of safeguarding applications in the industry. Dual detection ranges, configurable safety zones, precision engineering, and functional safety credentials provide robust personnel and asset protection.

Compatibility & Connectivity
Ethernet Connectivity
The UAM-05LPA features an Ethernet interface that allows for easy connection to plant networks and controllers. It has a default IP address of 192.168.0.10 to enable plug-and-play connectivity. The IP address can be customized using the UAM Project Designer software. This Ethernet connection allows real-time access to configured project areas, 2D measurement data, and intensity values over the scanner's 270-degree field of view.
RS-485 Interface
The RS-485 interface enables the connection of up to 4 UAM laser scanners together in a master-slave configuration. This provides a simple way to expand safety zones across a wider area by linking multiple scanners. Data from all connected units can be accessed and monitored from the master scanner.
Digital and Analog I/O
Digital and analog I/O on the UAM-05LPA permit integration with muting functions or other safety components. Inputs support configuration of up to 32 areas across the 2 available input channels. Outputs include dedicated safety OSSDs as well as warning outputs and additional programmable digital lines. This extensive I/O facilitates sophisticated machine interfacing and functionalities.
Encoder Inputs
Up to 4 encoder inputs are available to directly accept shaft encoder feedback from machines, AGVs, or other mechanisms. This allows the scanner to monitor motion and implement functions like velocity monitoring for integrated moving machinery applications.
Power Supply Compatibility
The UAM-05LPA is compatible with both wired and battery power through an optional converter accessory. This allows it to be used in stationary industrial environments via standard power, as well as onboard moving vehicles and machinery that utilize battery packs.
